South Korean composer of European Classical music, she lives in Berlin. Student of György Ligeti in Hamburg. Winner of the Gaudeamus International Composition Competition in 1985 and the Grawemeyer Prize in 2004.
Her first opera, Alice in Wonderland, was premiered on 30 June 2007 by the Bavarian State Opera under the direction of Kent Nagano. Chin is especially fascinated by the voice, a fascination manifested in some of her most important works.
Composer and orchestra conductor born in Cuba, she is also an excellent pianist. As if by magic, she combines her busy academic schedule at the Music Conservatory of Brooklyn College and the CUNY Graduate Centre in Manhattan (New York) with her work as orchestra conductor, composer and her active participation in events and projects such as the Whitney Museum’s Contemporary Music Series (1986), of which she was musical director and orchestra conductor; artistic director of Composers Forum Inc of New York (1987); co-founder alongside Denis Rusell Davies of the “Sounds of America” festival (1994); new music advisor to Kurt Masur and the New York Philharmonic (1993-1997); and Latin American music advisor for the American Composers Orchestra until 2001.
An ample catalogue of works is the undeniable proof of this implacable woman’s activity and her creative capacity. Her works span almost all the genres of instrumental and vocal concert music. Densely textured, her works for chamber ensemble and orchestra exhibit a great timbral diversity. Her language has incorporated Afro-Caribbean percussion instruments as well as the voice. The use of African elements gives her work an added colour and connect with her Cuban roots.
Gabiela Ortiz is considered one of the most important composers of her generation. She has won many prizes, such as: the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship (2004), National University Distinction (2004), 1st prize in the National
Millennium End New Music “Silvestre Revueltas” competition (2000), 1st prize in the “Alicia Urreta” composition competition (1988), the Mozart Medal, awarded by the Austrian Embassy and the Domecq Cultural Foundation (1997), recognition by the Mexican Union of Theatre and Music Historians (1998), an Encouragement Grant for Young Creators from the Mexican National Funds for Culture and the Arts, support from the Ford Foundation, Inroads a Program of Arts International, The Multi-Arts Production Fund of the Rockefeller Foundation (1997); and the US-Mexico Fund for Culture (2000-2002).
At present she is a member of the National System of Creators of the National Funds for Culture and the Arts. She is a full-time professor at the National School of Music of the UNAM. Her music is published by Ediciones Mexicanas de Música, Arla Music, Schott and Boosey & Hawks.
Her work has been radio broadcast in many countries, as well as recorded on CD, DV and other media. She has received commissions from numerous festivals and international institutions such as: the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the International Cervantine Festival, the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, the Malmö Symphony Orchestra, South West Chamber Music, OFUNAM, La Camerata, the Simon Bolivar Orchestra, the Kronos Quartet, Percussion Claviers de Lyon, the Cuarteto Latinoamericano, Kroumata, Onix and distinguished soloists and conductors, among which are: Dawn Upshaw, Sarah Leonard- Esa-Pekka Salonen, Carlos Miguel Prieto, Zoltan Kocsis, Pierre Amoyal, Giséle Ben Dor, David Alan Miller, Fillipo Latanzi, Steven Schick and Alejandro Escuer.
Her opera “Únicamente la Verdad: La Verdadera Historia de Camelia la Tejana” (Only the Truth: the True Story of Camelia the Texan) was chosen by the Mexico Festival and the National Opera Company to inaugurate the Mexico Festival in 2010. The production was awarded the Las Lunas del Auditorio Prize for the best Classical music production. In 2013 Únicamente la Verdad was presented by the Long Beach Opera in Los Angeles, California, and received excellent reviews in the LA Times and Opera News.
